WBC 2016 Legacy Travel Award
This award was established in recognition of a generous donation from 10e Congrès Mondial des Biomatériaux : World Biomaterials Congress 2016 Montréal Inc.
WBC2016, held in Montréal, Canada, in May 2016, was a major achievement led by members of the Canadian biomaterials community and strongly supported by the international biomaterials community. The Congress resulted in the largest gathering of biomaterials and tissue engineering scientists ever held at a single venue.
The event generated surplus revenue, which the Congress organizers have directed toward furthering the mandate of the organization by supporting young scientists’ participation in national and international biomaterials-focused meetings.
The organizers wished to extend the legacy of WBC2016 in Canada for up to 30 years by promoting the exchange of scientific, engineering, and health‑science knowledge related to biomaterials. This is accomplished by funding trainee travel to the annual meeting of the Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) or to the international World Biomaterials Congress (WBC).
Value of the Award

The amount of each CBS Legacy Travel Award typically ranges from $500 to $1,000 and may vary from year to year. Award amounts also consider the distance a student must travel from their home institution to attend the CBS Annual Meeting.
In leap years (2028, 2032, 2036, etc.), the award will support travel costs associated with trainee participation in a WBC Congress.

Applicants must be registered full time in an undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral program and be in good standing at a Canadian university at the time of abstract submission.

Applicants must submit an abstract to the Annual Meeting of the CBS or, as applicable, to the WBC, and must be members of the Canadian Biomaterials Society at the time of abstract submission.

Applicants may apply for and receive awards in multiple years; however, no more than one award may be granted in any given year.

Candidates must be enrolled in a biomaterials-related program of study, and this must be attested to by their supervisor.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong academic record and satisfactory progress in their program of study or research. This will be assessed based on academic records, the submitted curriculum vitae, a letter of recommendation from the supervisor, and other indicators of scholarly achievement.

In WBC years (2028, 2032, 2036, etc.), only applicants who have received acceptance of a presentation at the WBC will be considered for this award, with preference given to oral presentations. Proof of acceptance and a copy of the accepted abstract must be provided as part of the application.

Procedure

Applicants must submit the completed application form along with all required supplementary materials. Supplementary materials include a curriculum vitae, an academic transcript (for graduate students only; PDF transcripts are acceptable), and a letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor.
For applicants participating in a WBC, a copy of the accepted abstract and the email from the WBC organizers confirming acceptance of the abstract as an oral presentation must also be included with the application.
Applications will be reviewed by the CBS Awards Committee. Award recipients will be selected based on the following weighting criteria:
- 60% – Quality of the candidate, as assessed through academic records and curriculum vitae
- 30% – Quality of the project and submitted abstract
- 10% – Service to the Canadian Biomaterials Society
To apply, applicants must merge the application form and all supplementary materials into a single PDF document and submit it by email to the CBS Awards committee prior to the application deadline. Letters of support from supervisors may optionally be submitted as a separate email, provided that the trainee’s name is clearly indicated in the subject line.
Successful applicants will be notified by email, and competition results will be announced on the CBS website.
Expense Reimbursement

Expense Reimbursement
- Following completion of the scholar’s visit to the conference (or the host institution), awardees must submit an expense reimbursement form along with original receipts. Receipts are required for all claimed expenses, except for per diems and mileage.
- Claimed expenses are expected to align with the approved budget.
Eligible expenses include:
- Travel to and from the conference or host institution (airfare, rail, bus, taxi, or mileage); Standard class of service (economy fare) is required for air and rail travel.
- Accommodation for up to two weeks
- A modest per diem ($25 per day) to help offset incidental expenses incurred during the visit
Reimbursement limit:
- Reimbursement is limited to a maximum of $3,000 per award. The Awards Committee recognizes that unforeseen costs may arise. If actual expenses differ significantly from the approved budget, justification must be provided in the expense report. The Awards Committee will review the justification and determine whether the additional costs are reasonable and eligible for reimbursement. Regardless of circumstances, total reimbursement will not exceed $3,000 per award.
