Biomaterials Awards

WBC 2016 Legacy Postdoctoral Experience Award

―

Award Deadline: 2027-02-28

This award was established in recognition of a generous donation from 10e Congrès Mondial des Biomatériaux : World Biomaterials Congress 2016 Montréal Inc.

The World Biomaterials Congress 2016 (WBC2016), held in Montréal, Canada, in May 2016, was a major achievement led by members of the Canadian biomaterials community and strongly supported by the international biomaterials community. The Congress resulted in the largest gathering of biomaterials and tissue engineering scientists ever convened at a single venue.

The event generated revenue that enabled the Congress organizers to further their mandate by supporting postdoctoral fellows in discovering both the cultural richness and scientific depth of Canada’s biomaterials community.

The organizers sought to extend the legacy of WBC2016 in Canada over a 15‑year period by promoting the exchange of scientific, engineering, and health‑science knowledge related to biomaterials. This goal is achieved by funding postdoctoral trainees to travel to Canadian universities other than their home institution, thereby broadening their engagement with and familiarity with the wider Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) community.

Value of the Award

―

The amount of each WBC-2016 Legacy Postdoctoral Experience Award is typically of $3,000 and may vary.
Award amounts also consider the distance a PDF must travel from their home institution to their host institution.

Eligibility and
Selection Criteria

―

  • Award nominees must be international trainees formally registered full time in a postdoctoral program and be in good standing at a Canadian university at the time of application. Evidence of registration must be provided in the application (e.g., a copy of the formal letter of offer from the university).
  • Priority will be given to international postdoctoral trainees. However, if no eligible international applicants are received, domestic postdoctoral fellows may also be considered.
  • Applicants may not receive the award in multiple years but may reapply in subsequent competitions if they were unsuccessful in a previous application.
  • Candidates must be engaged in a biomaterials‑related program of research, and this must be attested to by their supervisor.
  • The application must include a two‑page description of the proposed travel plan, outlining the objectives and planned activities during the visit. This description should specify, as applicable, the laboratories to be visited, the duration of each visit, anticipated interactions with faculty and trainees, whether the candidate will deliver a seminar or learn new techniques, and any expected outcomes such as collaboration between the home and host supervisors.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong academic record, be published authors in biomaterials‑related fields, and have made satisfactory progress in their postdoctoral research. Evaluation will be based on academic records, letters of recommendation from both the home and host supervisors, and other indicators of scholarly achievement.
  • The candidate, as well as the home and host supervisors, must be members of the CBS.
  • The Awards Committee will also consider the candidate’s leadership and engagement within the CBS and/or affiliated student chapters.
  • In the application cover letter, candidates must explicitly confirm their commitment to submit a one‑ to two‑page report describing their travel experience during the tenure of the award and, if requested, to present their experience at a subsequent Annual Meeting of the CBS.

Application
Procedure

―

Applicants must submit the completed application form along with all required supplementary materials. Supplementary materials include a curriculum vitae, a letter of support from their supervisor, and a letter of support from their expected supervisor at the host institution to the CBS Awards Committee prior to the application deadline.

Applications will be reviewed by the CBS Awards Committee. Award recipients will be selected based on the following weighting criteria:

  • 50% – Quality of the candidate, as assessed through academic records and curriculum vitae
  • 40% – Quality of the proposed travel plan and engagement project
  • 10% – Past service and planned activities with the CBS

To apply, applicants must merge the application form and all supplementary materials into a single PDF document and submit it by email to the CBS Awards committee prior to the application deadline. Letters of support from supervisors may optionally be submitted as a separate email, provided that the trainee’s name is clearly indicated in the subject line.

Successful applicants will be notified by email, and competition results will be announced on the CBS website.

Expenses & Reimbursement

―

Expense Reimbursement

  • Following completion of the scholar’s visit to the host institution, awardees must submit an expense reimbursement form along with original receipts. Receipts are required for all claimed expenses, except for per diems and mileage.
  • Claimed expenses are expected to align with the approved budget.

Eligible expenses include:

  • Travel to and from the conference or host institution (airfare, rail, bus, taxi, or mileage); Standard class of service (economy fare) is required for air and rail travel.
  • Accommodation for up to two weeks
  • A modest per diem ($25 per day) to help offset incidental expenses incurred during the visit

Reimbursement limit:

  • Reimbursement is limited to a maximum of $3,000 per award. The Awards Committee recognizes that unforeseen costs may arise. If actual expenses differ significantly from the approved budget, justification must be provided in the expense report. The Awards Committee will review the justification and determine whether the additional costs are reasonable and eligible for reimbursement. Regardless of circumstances, total reimbursement will not exceed $3,000 per award.
