CBS Visiting Scholar Award

The Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) offers a Visiting Scholar Award to provide promising early‑career scientists (trainees: PhD students and postdoctoral fellows (PDFs) with the opportunity to visit another university or laboratory with shared research interests. The award aims to stimulate recipients’ interest in pursuing a career in the field of biomaterials.
In addition, the award seeks to foster collaboration and promote the exchange of technologies and ideas among Canadian universities engaged in biomaterials research.
Value of the Award

This award has a value of a maximum of $3,000, to cover travel and housing expenses for a visit of up to 2 weeks.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The award is open to Ph.D. students in their second year and beyond, as well as postdoctoral fellows (PDFs), working in the field of biomaterials. To be considered for the award, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Applicants must have been members of the CBS for at least one full year (Ph.D. students) or six months (PDFs) at the time of application. In addition, the supervising professors at both the home and host institutions must be members of the Canadian Biomaterials Society.
Applicants must have attended at least one Annual Meeting of the Canadian Biomaterials Society, including a World Biomaterials Congress, prior to submitting their application.
Each application will be reviewed by the CBS Awards Committee, and applicants will be notified of the outcome in a timely manner.

Procedure

- The student/PDF should submit:
- a current CV including the list of publications;
- a short summary describing the proposed research activities during his/her visit in the hosting institution (maximum 2 pages);
- a one-page budget summarizing the expected expenses using the attached budget template.
- The supervising professors (both in the student home and hosting institutions) should submit a support letter.
- Applications are due on February 28th annually and should be sent electronically to the CBS Secretary. The results will be announced at the Annual Meeting of the CBS.
- At the end of the visiting period, the awardee must submit a report that will be published in the CBS Newsletter, along with an expense reimbursement form (see below). The Visiting Scholar’s Report template can be downloaded from here. Please submit the report to the CBS Awards Committee.
Expenses & Reimbursement

Expense Reimbursement
- Following completion of the scholar’s visit, awardees must submit an expense reimbursement form along with original receipts. Receipts are required for all claimed expenses, except for per diems and mileage.
- Claimed expenses are expected to align with the approved budget.
Eligible expenses include:
- Travel to and from the host institution (airfare, rail, bus, taxi, or mileage); Standard class of service (economy fare) is required for air and rail travel.
- Accommodation for up to two weeks
- A modest per diem ($25 per day) to help offset incidental expenses incurred during the visit
Reimbursement limit:
- Reimbursement is limited to a maximum of $3,000 per award. The Awards Committee recognizes that unforeseen costs may arise. If actual expenses differ significantly from the approved budget, justification must be provided in the expense report. The Awards Committee will review the justification and determine whether the additional costs are reasonable and eligible for reimbursement. Regardless of circumstances, total reimbursement will not exceed $3,000 per award.
