Biomaterials Awards
CBS Merit & Travel Award
In the spirit of nationwide collaboration, fostering scientific connections, and recognizing excellence, the Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) provides financial support to trainees—primarily graduate students and postdoctoral fellows—who wish to participate in the Society’s conferences.
The CBS Annual Conference is hosted for three consecutive years in a Canadian institution, usually in different cities. Each year within this three‑year cycle, a different Canadian institution serves as the local organizer. Every leap year (2028, 2032, 2036, …), the national conference is paused, and CBS members—including trainees—are encouraged to attend the World Biomaterials Congress (WBC), the premier global gathering in biomaterials research.
The CBS Merit and Travel Award supports travel-related expenses for trainees attending either a CBS Annual Meeting or the WBC.
For CBS Annual Meetings, students are not required to submit a separate application. All trainee members who submit an abstract may simply indicate, during the abstract submission process, that they wish to be considered for this award.

Eligibility
& Selection Criteria
―
-
Applicants must be registered full time in an undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral program and be in good standing at a Canadian university at the time of abstract submission.
-
Applicants must submit an abstract to the Annual Meeting of the CBS (or the WBC Congress, as applicable) and be members of the CBS at the time the abstract is submitted.
-
Applicants may apply for and receive awards in multiple years; however, only one award may be granted per year.
-
Recipients will be selected by the Awards Committee based on the quality of the submitted abstracts.
Application
Procedure
―
-
In years when the CBS Annual Meeting is held, all abstracts submitted by CBS trainee members will be automatically considered for CBS Merit and Travel Awards; no separate application is required.
-
In years when the WBC Congress is held, applicants must complete the application form and submit both the completed form and their abstract by email to the CBS Awards committee.
Expenses & Reimbuserment
―
Expense Reimbursement
- Following completion of the scholar’s visit to the conference (or the host institution), awardees must submit an expense reimbursement form along with original receipts. Receipts are required for all claimed expenses, except for per diems and mileage.
- Claimed expenses are expected to align with the approved budget.
Eligible expenses include:
- Travel to and from the host institution (airfare, rail, bus, taxi, or mileage); Standard class of service (economy fare) is required for air and rail travel.
- Accommodation for up to two weeks
- A modest per diem ($25 per day) to help offset incidental expenses incurred during the visit
Reimbursement limit:
- Reimbursement is limited to a maximum of $3,000 per award. The Awards Committee recognizes that unforeseen costs may arise. If actual expenses differ significantly from the approved budget, justification must be provided in the expense report. The Awards Committee will review the justification and determine whether the additional costs are reasonable and eligible for reimbursement. Regardless of circumstances, total reimbursement will not exceed $3,000 per award.
